I've always had a passion for animals. Growing up
my family owned many types of pets. Not only dogs
and cats, but exotics as well. Our 14' boa
constrictor and a skunk named Chanel (like the perfume!)
were two of my
favorites.
As an adult I had fun teaching my first dog to shake,
roll over, play dead; the usual parlor tricks. He
was a great dog, but even with the tricks I taught him I
could never trust him off leash. He was "too
friendly" and would take off and say hi to every
other dog or person he saw.
Then I got a puppy. His name was Jake, but
everybody called him "devil dog". He
would jump up, pull on the leash and destroy whatever he
could get his little teeth on. He even ate a dog
training video I borrowed from the library! Yes, I
had to go to the library and explain that my puppy ate
the dog training video.
As Jake grew up he learned to shake and roll over,
but wouldn't respond to any real commands I gave
him. Sadly, at one point I actually thought I
would have to give him away.
After a particularly frustrating morning with Jake I
went out to the post office to mail a letter.
Inside was a woman with a dog. The dog was sitting
happily by her side! I couldn't believe it.
My dog would never hold still that long. I had to
talk with her.
That was the day that changed my life. The
woman introduced me to a professional dog trainer.
I had only heard about group classes and hobby club
training before and that hadn't worked for Jake.
She said I needed "real world" training.
After working with the trainer just a few times I
realized how much of Jake's behavior was because of our
communication gap. Now I was able to develop a
proper relationship with my dog that gave both of us
what we needed to finally be able to enjoy each
other. Jake could go out to Starbucks with me, run
on the beach off-leash, and hang out with my
guests. I was now able to give him the quality of
life he deserved.
Shortly after training Jake I gave up my real estate
abstracting business and followed my new found dream of
training people and their dogs.
I graduated from National K9 School for Dog Trainers
in Columbus, OH in 1996 where I studied extensively and
was certified in areas of basic/advanced obedience,
search and rescue, personal protection, tracking/scent
discrimination, and handicapped support.
Learning never stops and I believe in staying
educated on new theories and technologies in dog
training. I have attended the No Limitations
School in Nevada as well as the International School for
Dog Trainers in Florida. I'm a professional member
of the International Association of Canine Professionals
(IACP) and attend workshops, seminars, and conferences
regularly.
Every day a dog is given up or worse, loses his life
because of lack of human/dog communication and
"real world" training. It is my personal
mission to educate and help people and their dogs so
that they can live full and harmonious lives together.
